Monday 14th March - Michelle Beaver, Coronary Care Nurse and More....
Organised by Cheshire Federation, Michelle Beaver gave us a Zoom presentation about her three decades as a nurse, something she had wanted to be from the age of 15. She told us about her first traumatic night shift she experienced once she qualified and then how she was given a 3 month posting on CCU where she eventually stayed for 20 years! Over the years, she felt that she was getting stale and needed a challenge so she started off by walking the Great Wall of China, followed by other challenges including climbing Kilimanjaro, whilst raising money for charity which has now exceeded o£35,000. As a result of this, she was even invited to Buckingham Palace. Her various exercise antics on social media was noticed by the Chief Executive of the Trust which resulted in a weekly ‘Fit-Nurse Friday’ post.

BOOK CLUB - FEBRUARY 2022
The chosen book this month was Perfume by Patrick Suskind and the discussion was led by Anne. Advertised as Amazon's number 1 best seller in erotic historical fiction, it produced an interesting mix of opinions but a good chat about smells made for a great lighthearted evening as usual.

JOANNE GOODWIN, CHESHIRE LIFE EDITOR - JANUARY 2022
Joanne learned to read, aged five, by picking out the words in her grandmother's Woman magazine. Joanne started her career as a reporter on the Stafford and Stone Newsletter before joining her hometown daily The Sentinel, in Stoke-on-Trent, and working on all aspects of the newsroom operation, from reporting and news editing to subbing, features editing and design. After her spell as an editor on the aforementioned weekly titles, she returned to The Sentinel and held roles including assistant editor and then deputy editor. A few years (hmmm...) later, after a career in regional newspapers and magazines, she got the job she had long coveted – the editorship of Cheshire Life. But she wasn't prepared for the impact the title has, or how wonderful it would be to have this professional swansong. She will be talking about her roles and experiences as a reporter and an editor, and explain why she is glad to be working on magazines, not newspapers, these days.

FOOD AND CLIMATE CHANGE - JANUARY 2022
For our January monthly meeting, the speaker was Professor Sarah Bridle and she gave us a fascinating insight into how the type and preparation of food we eat can have such a massive impact on CO2 emissions and ultimately climate change. Through a very interactive presentation, we learnt some of the foods we should be avoiding, or at least reducing our consumption of. She highlighted what a problem it is getting the message across to the general public as currently, much of the detail is not readily accessible. We all now know however, that we should be avoiding drinking large lattes!!

BOOK CLUB - JANUARY 2022
The book discussed at January's Book Club was Three Hours by Rosamund Lupton with the discussion ably led by Dot Bracegirdle. The book tells of a horrifying scenario of a school under siege with just 3 hours to find who will die and for what.
The book was enjoyed by everyone present although some of the subject matter was found to be somewhat harrowing. The venue for the meeting was Smoke and this was a popular choice. |
