Monthly Meetings - 2022 Programme of Events
Join us for yet another fun and varied programme throughout 2022. If you have a hobby, interest or know of an exciting speaker that you think we may be able to include in next years programme, please email Jane Rawlings on [email protected] or by using the Contact Us page. We have been working very hard to plan and book our events and speakers for 2022 and our programme is now complete and shown below:
All meetings will commence at 8.00pm but please do not arrive before 7.30pm to allow your committee time to set up the room. Thank you.
Monday 17th January Sarah Bridle Author of Food and Climate Change.
Our speaker this evening will be Professor Sarah Bridle, a transdisciplinary researcher, driven by the need to tackle climate change. She focuses on a quantitative approach to transform food systems to help tackle climate change and the environmental and nutrition impacts of different dietary options.
Monday 21st February Lady Wildflower History of Burlesque. Audience participation in how to perfect a glove peel!
Lady Wildflower is an international burlesque performer, producer and tutor and has been voted into the Top 20 UK burlesque performers for the last four years. She will tell us about the fascinating history of burlesque which has been around since the 17th Century where it originated in Italian theatre as a type of comic interlude. She will finish her talk with a ‘glove peeling ‘ lesson.
Monday 21st March Lesley Bull History of Venetian Carnival and demonstration of mask making.
Lesley Bull is a textile artist. Her talk on Venetian Carnival combines History, Masks, Costume and Artwork in a frivolous talk about excesses, pantomime, indulgences and debauchery!
Monday 11th April (2nd Monday) Charity Evening
Representatives from The Christie and the lady that makes sleeping bags out of crisp packets will talk about the charities that they are involved with.
Monday 16th May Jamie Birtles Self Defence
Jamie is the Lead Civilian Instructor with the Northern Krav Maga Self Defence club in Manchester. Krav Maga is a modern Israeli self defence system that has evolved from military applications over the last 70 years. There will be plenty of audience participation!
Monday 20th June Malcolm Macfarlane Great Musicals of Stage and Screen
Malcolm Macfarlane is a retired banker and author with a passion for popular music of the 20th century. Malcolm has published books about Bing Crosby, Perry Como and Rosemary Clooney. His talk is about the great musicals of stage and screen.
Monday 18th July Alison Utting The life of Eglantyne Jebb, founder of Save the Children
Alison Utting will tell us about Eglantyne Jebb . She was a British social reformer who founded the Save The Children organisation at the end of the First World War to relieve the effects of famine in Austria-Hungary and Germany.

Monday 19th September Lynn Moores Mock Magistrates Court
This meeting has been cancelled as a mark of respect to her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 on the day of her funeral.
Monday 17th October Jayne Cocoa Nut Grove Chocolate Tasting
The chance to learn about chocolate and enjoy a chocolate tasting led by Jayne from Cocoa Nut Grove Chocolate.
Monday 21st November Annual Meeting Christmas Food Taste Test Challenge
As well as the formal business of the meeting, we will be holding a Christmas Food Taste Test Challenge which will be a blind tasting of several different Christmas foods from a range of supermarkets to see which ones are the best buys. We will also be holding our traditional Members Makers Markets and a competition to see who is wearing the oldest item of clothing.
Monday 12th December (2nd Monday) Christmas Party at the URC Lady Wildflower
We are delighted to report that Burlesque Performer Lady Wildflower will be entertaining us this evening and she will also give us the opportunity to learn how to peel a glove. As well as this, a meal with a choice of either Lamb or Vegetable Tajine followed by a dessert of either Waffle Berry Pudding or seasonal fruit will be served. Let us know your choice when you buy your ticket (£10 per head, Ref E4) at either the October or November meeting. Don't forget to add a bit of sparkle to the evening in the form of clothing, accessories or even a drink.
