Record of Monthly Meeting October 18th 2021 (Record by Donna Johnstone)
This was Fulshaw WI’s second face-to-face meeting since lockdown and it was lovely to be able to talk to members during the refreshment break. Thanks to Dot and her team of helpers Jan Murray, Cathy Hessner and Sarah Ervine for supplying the refreshments in the 'new' kitchen.
Pauline Handley and Diane Atkinson (our Global Climate Ambassadors) took us through the events going on in the ‘Wilmslow Festival of Nature’. On display were the six 'sustainable' Halloween costumes made out of old material and re-cycled clothes by members for the 'Sustainable Fashion Show'.
Ed Glinert, a Manchester walking tour guide, and acclaimed author gave us an entertaining insight into the world below the streets of Manchester, which included showing us the old coal mine beneath the Etiad Football Stadium (Manchester City's ground), the site of the planned but never built underground railway station (the Royal Exchange Theatre), and Manchester's secret atomic bunker site.
Raffle prize winners included Lydie Donald, Anne Cichocki, Alison Boddington, Jackie Rabone and Jennie Palin.
Donna was also delighted to announce that we have a member who has agreed to volunteer to be the next President - it’s Jane Rawlings. Thank you, Jane, for stepping forward.
In terms of bursaries, they should be re-starting next year when more courses will be available. For those with existing outstanding bursaries, they will have until the end of September 2022 to use them. For next 2022 bursaries going forward they will have 12 months from the date of issue to use them.
Events
There will also be a mini-maker’s market where Grace Brierley and Dee Waugh will be selling items for Christmas. In addition there will be an accessories exchange (mainly handbags and purses) and a ‘handbag’ competition.
For the Christmas event the committee will be assembling hampers again, so members were asked to bring any hamper donations to this next meeting, or items can be dropped off at Donna’s house (7 Hawthorn Park, Wilmslow SK9 5BP). All members names will be included in the hamper draw. The theme will be Spanish and members will be learning to dance ‘flamenco style’. Tickets will go on sale at next month’s meeting and the ticket price will be confirmed later this month. It will be no more that £10.

Events
- NECG Trip to Harrogate on November 29th November - £16. Pick up at Woodford at 9am and leaving Harrogate at 4.30pm. If members were interested in going, they were requested to contact Amanda Stevens by email ([email protected]).
- There is an exhibition at the Whitworth Art Gallery about 'stillbirth' designed by the parents who have had stillbirths themselves. It is a very moving, but not depressing exhibition which is free and is running for a year. Jennie Banfield encouraged members to attend.
- Rosie Reid brought to members attention a wreath making activity at Capesthorne Hall.
- The Toy Appeal - Dee Drake has said that they are again buying toys from wholesalers using funds raised on Just Giving, so if members wanted to donate they can do via the ‘Just Giving’ link. For those who want to help pack toys, the date of packing is Friday 3rd December 9-1 pm or 1-5pm (at the Knutsford football ground site near Tatton Park).
- Foil Blister Packs - Dee has found a way of collecting and sending empty tablet blister packs through Tetracycle, so she'll have a box for members to drop off their empty paracetamol packs at the next meeting.
