Monthly Meetings - 2023 Programme of Events
Join us for yet another fun and varied programme throughout 2023. If you have a hobby, interest or know of an exciting speaker that you think we may be able to include in next years programme, please email Jane Rawlings on [email protected] or by using the Contact Us page. We have been working very hard to plan and book our events and speakers for 2023 and our programme is now complete and shown below:
All meetings will commence at 8.00pm but please do not arrive before 7.30pm to allow your committee time to set up the room. Thank you.
Monday 16th January Lynn Moores - Mock Magistrates Court.
Following on from Nick Sheardon's zoom presentation on The Workings of a Magistrates Court he will be joined by Lynn Moores to present a mock trial where members will be encouraged to participate in the proceedings. Do you fancy playing the accused?
Monday 20th February Jane Thomas - The Pearlies
Jane presents an illustrated talk about the fascinating history of the pearly kings and queens.
Monday 20th March Sue Holden - And the Band Played On
We all know about the history of the Titanic but have you heard the story about ......Sue covers factors that led to the sinking of the Titanic you may not have heard about.
Monday 17th April - Charity Meeting
We will hear from representatives of Emmaus, a charity helping homeless and destitute people, Save Dane's Moss, a campaign to prevent an important historic peat bog and rare wildlife habitat being built on and Peaches Womb Cancer Trust whose aim is to preserve the health and improve the experience of those with or at risk of womb cancer and their families. in its soil. Monday 15th May Kerry Daynes - Forensic Psychologist
Kerry initially worked in forensic mental health, including for the Prison Service and later worked in the NHS and public sector secure psychiatric services and quickly gained a reputation for her ability to treat the most complex, challenging and often dangerous patients. When she isn’t writing her books or being filmed for her regular TV appearances, she spends her working time working in criminal expert witness work.
Monday 19th June Olivia Potts - Cook and Cookery Writer
Olivia Potts entertained us so wonderfully on zoom during lock down and is returning to bring us more fun and demonstrations, ably assisted by her mother in law, our own Jennie Palin.
Monday 17th July Tricia Stewart - One of the Original Calendar Girls
Tricia is the originator and driving force behind the alternative WI Calendar that continues to be a global phenomenon to this day. Not to be missed!
August No Meeting
Monday 18th September Judith Townsend - The Bin Baby
Judith will recount her fascinating story of how she was thrown into a rubbish heap as a new born baby in China, but was happily discovered and looked after by a local Matron. An emotive and heart warming journey through Judith's life.
Monday 16th October Adrian Palmer - Story Teller
Back by popular request Adrian returns for another evening of his wonderful story telling, this time with a Halloween theme. Possibly not for the faint hearted!
Monday 20th November Annual Meeting
In addition to the usual business of the Annual Meeting, the following activities will also be featured:
Sweet Preserve Tasting Competition – bring in a jar of homemade jam or curd. We will be holding a tasting competition at the meeting.
Museum of Things – bring along an item from your home that evokes some memories and share these with the members at the meeting.
Members’ Market - Please let Jane know if you would like a stall at the members’ market. A chance to sell items you make or items you want to sell.
Monday 11th December (2nd Monday) Christmas Party at the URC
The theme for this years Christmas Party is Line Dancing. Tickets will be on sale at our November meeting. Casual dress, dancing feet, or clapping hands are all required!
